Major Record labels
These are refered to as The Majors. The majority of these are backed by comglomerates with stakes in other industries such as; Film, TV and Electronics.

Major Independents
Most of these 'majors' own or licence a series of smaller subsidary comapnies in order ot reach different audiences in different kinds of genre
-Columbia
-Island
-Syco
-RCA
-Virgin
Independents
There are a huge number of small companies with little or no financial connection to the majors. These comapanies often concentrate on a small number of acts, within a specialized niche in the industry. These are called Independents. An example of this is 'Domino Records'.
