Music videos are made in many different ways, there are 8 different types i am going to focas on today
Narrative
The very first, is narrative. A story based video that takes the audience on some kind of emotional journey to understand the reasoning behind an artist song. My example of a narritve music video is Mayday Parade - Stay. In this he sings about someone who is dying and the song title 'stay' suggests the girl is a loved one and he is singing about wanting her to stay and survive.
Cinematic
These videos are filmed in the same way, and the same techniques as a film, They normaly portray sadness or loss. For example, Ed Sheeran - the A team represents a protitiue living in London trying to survive. Only at one point in the video does the singer make an apperance. These videos are meant to be high production line videos, however this particualr video was surpsingly low cost considering its apperance.
Studio Based
These videos concentrate on the artists and the music they are producing. They are only shot in one location and usally involve some very interesting shots to make it look more interesting. The video will only show shots of the artists instruments/facial expressions. My example is The Pretender- Foo Fighters. This video is editied very fast, to keep it interesting and mostly showing their emotions. They stay in the same location the entire video.
Intertextuality
These types of videos are made to refer back to a past video/significan occurance. They are not to be mistaken with parodies as they do no mock/make fun of the previous video in any way. Alien Ant Farm - Smooth Criminal uses context from the famous Michael Jackson song.
Parody
A music video that has been made to laugh at another video. This is usually two bands/performers from different genres mocking eachother through their videos. My example of Blink-182 - All the small things is a parody of a Backstreet Boys video. It is clearly shown by the reference to the costume choice.
Pastiche
These are music videos that are filmed to look old/from the past. They also work from different genres from the past in comparison to how we see that certain genre now. An example is Christian Augulera - Candy Man. This is set when the navy men would go to see shows on their breaks in different countires, and we can clearly see that by the costumes and set.
'As Live'
These videos use real footage from conerts the band/artist have performed in. They usually come from tours showing different countires and fans. An example of this is You Me at Six - Reckless. These types of video are my Favorites as they show a journey, and make fans excited as they may feature in the bands video (i feature in this video faintly and it makes me want to watch it lots) which can give the band more fans/money.
Animation
These videos are made up of animated characters/sictuations. They are primarilary made by a computer. These videos are typically made for humour or fun. This one i have choosen by Brunettes Shoot Blondes shows a love story going on through 14 different screens in real time. This a new and creative way to create a animated music video.
