Blog 10 - Jamie Thraves

Jamie Thraves is an up and coming director. He started his career at university making short films. He has an award winning cshort films called 'calling card' and 'foot in the door'. Jamie originaly started doing music videos as a way to get into the film industry but ended up directing some recent videos that proved popular such as 'Coldplay -The scientist' and even a couple Sam Smith videos.

Here is one of the first gigs that Jamie got. This song is very strange and though out shows the life of a man working in the city. The band are playing in what looks like an ordinary flat, possibly the home of the main character. In the middle we see him laying down in the middle of the street and he is spoken to by a number of passers by. The subtitles allow us to know what the people are saying but at then end when the man explains theres no subtitle and  we dont know why he was on the floor. This leaves us not knowing why, an unfinished storyline. Here he takes from Roland Barthes theory of the enigma codes. Here instead of closing the story he leaves it open.

This is another famous music videos that Jamie Directed. Here again we see a story line of the main man taking back time to save his girlfriend from a car crash. The whole video is filmed in reverse which gives is a cool effect. Here we see Jamie Thraves forming a signature theme of a story line thoughout his videos. The clever camera work in this gives the story a more modern edge than the previous video.

This is one of the most recent videos which shows the use of reverse again. This time it shows a 'broken record' effect to mimic the name of the song and what its about. The video also has a story about a girl who feels like shes in a broken record relationship. This budge for this video was slightly higher and it shows as the use of set is clever.

Jamies Tips
- Jamie himself gave tips to up and coming directors and this is what he said;
1. always listen to all teh lyrics of the song as this is something to go on when thinking of ideas in the video.
2. To feel the emotions of the song and connect with the aritst and how they are trying to portay the
song.
